of things I learned....

While in Spain:

Never plan to do errands on Sundays. Everything WILL be closed. 

Don't try to take out the trash before 10 pm. The bins don't show up til then. 

Don't bother bringing your AMEX. No one takes that card.

If you get stuck behind Spaniards who are walking, add at least two minutes to your total walking time. They don't know how to walk fast. They don't stroll, they ask permission from one foot before they move the other foot. 

Never eat the bread. They will charge you. Only eat it if you are having tapas, then it is included. 

Avoid gift shops on the main roads, they will overcharge you. 

Avoid restaurants on the main roads and on plazas. They will rob you. 

Never accept green leafs from women. They are gypsies trying to take advantage of you. 

Don't ask to split the bill. 

Befriend the coffee people. 

Don't put sugar in your coffee. You will ruin it. 

Go on tours. It is the only way to really learn the history and the side stories of the towns you visit. 

Bring a jacket. Even if it is July and everyone tells you you are stupid for bringing it cause it is soooo hot in Spain. You WILL need it. 

Avoid taking cabs. You will see so much more if you walk. 

During REBAJAS, go at siesta time. Big stores are open and everyone is in bed. You will have the store to yourself!!!

Always bring cash and at least two credit cards. Your card will work in one store, and then not work right next door. It's a Spanish thing. 

Wear sunblock. 

If you see a CAJA RURAL bank, there is free wifi there!

Whenever possible, buy authentic products. The cheap version will fall apart after the first wash. I am not joking. 

Whenever you have a stupid question, preface it by saying "I have a tourist question," they will smile and help out. 

Drink a lot of water. 

Eat at the appropriate time. Don't try to stick to your schedules because you will go hungry. That is, if you don't have a kitchen. 

Don't approach dogs that don't belong to you. Spaniards really don't like strangers petting their dogs. 

Avoid parks after dark and stay in well lit areas. 

Don't be surprised if someone grabs you to move you out of their way. They will grab you from your waist, your arms. You will be touched. It is absolutely acceptable here. 

If someone bumps you, don't expect an apology. 

Kids roaming the streets at 1 am is totally normal. 

Customer service is almost nonexistent. Forget the American expectations. They don't work for tips. 

Keep an open mind. It will make your trip so much more enjoyable.
